  • Sending You Love

I wanted to reach out to all of you at this time with some love. It’s a scary time and we can all use a little reassurance. Now is a great time to create some rituals into your daily routine. Prayer and meditation when waking and before going to sleep will comfort you and in my honest opinion, help the world.

I have a friend who has an alarm set on her phone throughout her day to remind her to get up and dance, which I think is brilliant. Please make sure you are getting enough movement and fresh air to keep healthy. While we are all doing a bit of binge watching, make sure you are also reading, keeping your mind engaged. Most churches are now online so keep yourself uplifted.

Schedules are important for children at home from school but can help all of us stay on track. I’m trying to stay in gratitude for so many blessings. I hope to create a few free online art lessons and would welcome your feedback on that. I think a virtual dance party would be a great start.

Hopefully we will all become a bit more caring and more intentional with our priorities living through this crazy, fragile time.

  • Happy Fall Y’all!

Fall is my favorite time of year, the colors and the coziness. I love the reminders to stay in gratitude. Of course it helps that I live in the desert where we get fall fever instead of spring but it’s also about letting things go that are no longer working to allow better things some space. It’s amazing how even letting go a couple things a day can open up energy for new, wonderful things to appear.

I enjoy gardening which is a perfect reminder of this principle. You must remove the old, dead plants before sewing new seeds and planting new seedlings. Here in Phoenix we plant our best gardens when the weather is finally bearable. Fall is my time for purging what no longer serves me and making sure that I’m surrounded by not only the things that I enjoy but those that are true to my purpose.

    work in progress

I took a break from teaching the past few months to travel and paint and become all that I can be. I’ve painted in the Grand Canyon, Zion, Colorado, and Sedona this season as well as traveled to Costa Rica. I’m super blessed! So I’ve been overwhelmed with the beauty of nature and have so enjoyed trying to put it to canvas. As I grow and learn more I realize there is no end to this journey which delights me. I now have a shop on my website where you can purchase my original oils. Paintings are unframed and shipped free in the USA. Small sketches offered here.

I know that I’m also here to teach and uplift others so I’m formulating a perfect way to do just that. Stay tuned for announcements on exciting new offerings this Spring. I will offer intimate retreats that nourish your heart and reignite your creative passion leaving you relaxed and inspired.

I haven’t been entering any shows or competitions either, just enjoying the process and keeping my brush moving. I continue to grow as an artist and push my boundaries. I know it’s expected for artists to gather awards but it just seems silly to me to pay others to judge me. I’m trying to change my narrative on the subject and I have been accepted into the Oil Painters of America and will be participating in their Sedona Paint Out and show on November 16.

  • Brand New Day

I’d like to share this new painting that’s all about faith and healing. I’ve been primarily painting the landscape lately finishing my plein air pieces from my trips down the Grand Canyon and to Zion National Park which I’ve been posting for sale in my shop. I’ve always been drawn to the beauty of nature. While most folks were taking their kids to Disneyland, I took mine to the lake or camping up on the Mogollon Rim. Growing up in Minnesota might have something to do with my love of lakes and rivers. I’ve always felt comfortable in the middle of the woods and never worry even when camping alone. Of course I always have a dog or two with me.

Now back to this painting, Brand new day, which really is an homage to God. No matter what pain or loss I am going through I can sit in prayer and give it over to God and I am transported to a glorious place filled with light and beauty. I did a lot of crying and healing throughout the creation of this piece and I tried to illustrate the amazing wonder of God’s love pouring through to my spirit to comfort me and convince me that as a child of God I must be perfect just as I am. I’ve struggled with feelings of unworthiness throughout most of my life and now feel brave enough to share that fact and proud to admit I’m healing and almost feel equal to others.

Hope you have a beautiful day filled with love and faith!

  • My Answers to the Big Questions

Thanks so much Arizona Foothills for including me with your Trendsetters.

In case you missed it, here are my answers from Arizona Foothills Trendsetters. They chose to feature me from my longtime support of Free Arts AZ where I get the honor of healing and empowering neglected and abused kids and teens through intentional art.

    Title: professional teaching artist

    Married/Single: Married

Kids: 2 sons, 2 step sons, 2 grandkids

    City you live in: Phoenix

A typical day in my life includes…

my morning ritual which involves stretching, meditation, prayer, and journaling. Then I teach or paint or write or go on an adventure.

    I was born…

to create myself but also to help others feel the joy and empowerment that comes from creating.

    My favorite thing about Arizona…

the diversity of the landscape, so many places to explore!

    I’m listening to…

    the Tim Ferris Show.

    My family…

    means everything to me.

If I could have dinner with anyone, it would be…

this is so hard as there are so many artists living and dead that I would love to have a conversation with. I’m going to have to say, Richard Schmid, one of the best living artists in the world.

One thing I cannot live without…

being in the great outdoors or my paints and paintbrush.

When I was younger, I wanted to be…

a cowboy, a stunt man, a pilot, a bird, a singer, a dancer, an artist.

    I’m inspired by…

the beauty all around us, the light at dusk on everything, our gorgeous AZ sunsets, everything!

The one person who motivates me is…

all the folks who volunteer to mentor with Free Arts of AZ and give selflessly to give kids a better chance.

If I could change anything in the world, it would be…

all children would be cherished and loved, never neglected or abused and everyone would feel worthy and loved.

    The perfect day would be…

all day out in nature with my paints followed by a massage and dinner with my whole family.

    My first job was…

at a soda fountain in Merwyn’s drug store at age 14. That was my first real job but I began babysitting too young at age 9.

    My favorite escape…

going out into nature when the light is low, early morning or more often, at dusk and creating a painting of that experience “en plein air”.

    My life…

has been filled with lots of love and loss and has shaped me into who I am.

    I’m currently working on…

creating some lessons that combine creativity with soul searching that enrich the whole person and helps them find their true path.

    Always…

do your best, act with integrity, listen to others, be brave, trust your gut, sieze the day, eat the cake, be fearless, be yourself.

    Never…

judge others with no knowledge of their past or path.

    Favorite Quote…

“Life is mostly froth and bubble, two things stand like stone; kindness in another’s trouble, and courage in your own.” ~ Mother Theresa

Biggest Dream… to really make a difference in the lives of neglected children which is why I’ve been volunteering with Free Arts for 25 years. Also, to create a series of online lessons that nurture the artist within and help millions.

    My Pet Peeve(s)…

those who live in fear or hide behind their addictions.

  • Sweet Sparkling Summertime!

What an amazing Spring we have had in AZ! We were so blessed with lots of rain and cool weather. I love to garden and it’s been lovely eating meals out of the back yard. Sending best wishes to those of you in harm’s way with crazy weather patterns, so many tornados and flooding! As summer kicks off I sure hope you enjoy some family fun and backyard bbqs, whatever makes your heart soar.

    Grand Canyon Trip

I crossed an item off my bucket list by rafting the Grand Canyon for 8 days! The best part was that it was a painting trip! So I got to bring my painting equipment and hang out with other artists while immersed in the gorgeous setting. This trip was organized by Cody DeLong and our outfitter was AZRA. I highly recommend them! Here are a few of my paintings from the trip. I will continue to post more on my website as I complete them.  I loved meeting other artists and formed new friendships. I also did a lot of soul searching and read on for some changes in my life.

    Teaching

I have taught art for many years and I thoroughly enjoy sharing my love of creating with others. So many of my dearest friends were met by my teaching them some type of art. Most of you know my commitment to Free Arts for Abused Children of AZ is important to me and I’m proud to still be involved after 20+ years. As I try to live more intentionally I’ve decided this summer to teach for Free Arts at their MAC camp the first two weeks of June. These kids live in shelters and group homes and I hope to help them feel safe, learn new skills which will result in their developing hope and resilience. I will still teach the Youth Academy at Scottsdale Artists’ School for sessions 4, 5 and 6.

My first week of MAC camp just ended and I can’t tell you how moving it was to see abused and neglected teens find their  voice and share it with pictures and spoken word! I am definitely living my purpose right now.

I’ve learned from over 25 years of teaching art that no matter what your upbringing, we all have feelings of unworthiness and the simple act of creating can shift you into feeling worthy and full of joy and hope. There is something very magical that happens when you immerse yourself in the process. I will take a break from teaching this Fall to develop some new, exciting retreats and expand my painting skills.

To that end I am letting go of my paint party business as I think it devalues me as a serious artist.  I will instead be offering small retreats in beautiful settings that nurture the artist within as well as the spirit. It’s so important to me that I combine spirituality with my art lessons and live my purpose! I will also be closing my Etsy shop at the end of July and I will be securely selling originals from a shop directly on my website. Evolving . . .
